Following a two-year wait, Marion’s Wyatt Helmer, 21⁄2, has a new liver.

With parents Aaron and Traci Helmer waiting nearby, Wyatt received the transplant during an eight-hour surgery last Tuesday afternoon at a hospital in Kansas City.

As an infant, Wyatt was diagnosed with biliary atresia, a serious disease of the young infant that results in inflammation and obstruction of the bile ducts carrying bile from the liver into the intestine.

All seems to be going well post-surgery, Aaron told family and friends in one of several mass emails he sent last week.

According to the surgeon, Helmer said, “there is no concern of a non-functional liver—his new liver is working great.”

Helmer added in an email on Friday: “All of the nurses and doctors we have met with today have been absolutely thrilled with his progress and liver functions. We can’t begin to thank everyone enough for your prayers.”

He asks for continued prayers over the next few critical weeks as Wyatt’s body adjusts to the new liver and tries to avoid infection.
