Considering an unseasonable snowstorm on Friday evening, the 39th annual Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson this weekend ended with $388,000 raised to benefit the worldwide relief work of Mennonite Central Committee.

Last year, KMRS donated $370,000 to MCC.

“In spite of the Kansas weather, the 39th annual KMRS was a blessing and did very well,” said sale chair Rod Chrystie of rural Hutchinson.

“While we did not set any attendance records, the brave came out Friday in the snow and had the faith to join us again on Saturday for a wonderful time together.

“A big thanks to all who came and made what could have looked like a disaster into a real success.”

The quilt auction totaled $127,324—an increase from last year’s total of $98,000. Of the 200-plus quilts that were auctioned, 27 sold for more than $1,000.

Ruth Vogt of Hesston, quilt committee co-chair, said, “Our quilts sold very well. We had very quality hand-stitched quilts on this year’s auction.”

The general auction raised $49,245, including the following feature items: $3,400 for the classic Allis Chalmer tractor, $6,000 for the Mini FasTrak mower donated by Excel Industries Inc. of Hesston, and $2,300 for the playhouse donated by Hesston College Disaster Management program.

Other notable totals include: silent auction $2,170; first children’s auction $1,902; Penny Power collection $31,339; 10th Run for Relief $16,495; Feeding the Multitude (German buffet) $26,693.

The 40th annual sale is scheduled April 11-12, 2008, at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

More information about this year’s sale and updates on the next can be accessed online at www.kansas.mccsale.org.
