Hillsboro Kiwanis meeting set Dec. 2

 

The Hillsboro Kiwanis Club will meet at noon Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the city building, 118 E. Grand.

Agenda items include John O. Dalke reporting on the Marion County Toy Run.

A $7 meal is provided and non-member arrangements can be made by calling Kirby Rector, 947-5437.

 

Goessel plans tree lighting for Nov. 29

 

The first annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting in Goessel begins at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, following the alumni basketball game.

The event will be at the Main Street Station and organizers ask spectatators to bring lawn chairs.

 

Quilt guild plan Christmas party

 

Country Stitcher’s Quilt Guild will be meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 at the Hillsboro Scout House, Hillsboro Memorial Park.

The group will be having its Christmas party with a theme of Old Fashioned Log Cabin Christmas.

Those planning to attend are asked to bring finger food and gift for a gift exchange.

“Our fat quarter is red, green or Christmas fabric,” a spokesperson said.

 

Hesston Civic Club plans holiday tour

 

 

The Hesston Women’s Civic Club is sponsoring Holiday Homes in Hesston featuring five houses from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6

The homes on the tour are at 117 Kingsway; 10008 N. Essex Heights Rd.; 208 S. Main; 22 Pheasant Run and 11 Park View.

Proceeds will benefit the Good Samaritan Caring Fund of Schowalter Villa. Advanced tickets are $7 and available at many businesses or may be purchased the day of at each home, said Julie Krehbiel, Hesston Women’s Civic Club.  

In addition, a Bread and Soup bar, sponsored by the Hesston Women’s Civic Club, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Water's Edge Restaurant. For more information, call Krehbiel at 620-327-0597.

 

Birthday reception planned Dec. 14

A come-and-go reception in celebration of Ellen Darrow’s 90th birthday will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 in the Fellowship Hall of the Aulne Methodist Church, 140th at Pawnee in Marion.

The birthday party is being hosted by her family.

Former resident celebrates 90th

 

Carol Vogt of Salina is celebrating her 90th birthday on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

She and her late husband, Ray Vogt, Sr., moved to Hillsboro in 1952 and for 12 years owned and operated the Wheel-Inn Cafe on D Street in Hillsboro.

She later worked for Tabor College in food service and in 1987 she moved to Salina.

Her children, Ann Jordan and Leadell Ediger, both of Salina, and Ray Vogt of Kingwood, Texas, are requesting a card shower in her honor.

Cards may reach her in care of her daughter, Ann Jordan, 2443 Pheasant Lane, Salina, KS. 67401.

 

Legion Riders announce meeting

 

American Legion Riders will meet at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month at the Hillsboro American Legion, 405 Floral Dr.

Those interested are encouraged to attend, a spokesperson said.

 

Centre school plans Christmas program

 

 

“We Need A Little Christmas” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 in the Centre High School gymnasium at Lost Springs.

The program will include performances from kindergarten through sixth grade students with Lynley Remy and Chris Waclawik directing.

Fifth and sixth grade bands will be featured, along with the fourth grade recorder band, first through sixth grade choir students, and other singing selections by kindergarten through sixth graders.

While each group is singing, Remy said, the stage is being decorated so that by the end of the show, the stage is beautiful and ready for Christmas.

Brookens to give recital Nov. 29

 

Justin Brookens will perform a trumpet recital at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the new Performing Arts Center in Marion.

Brookens will be accompanied by Jenny Epp on piano. A brief pre-concert lecture begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Performing Arts Center is located directly south of Marion High School.

The event is free and open to the public.

 

Marion schedules Sunday home tour

 

 

The Marion Christmas Home Tour is from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30. This year’s theme is “A Natural Noel.”

Homes on the tour are Claude and Phyllis Landis at 2230 N. Sunrise; Outdoors Inn at 25 Jerome Street (Richard and Linda Sardou, proprietors) and Gerald and Jeannie Wildin, 524 S. Cedar. Refreshments and a “Books Are Fun” sale will be held at Marion City Library at 101 Library Street.

Tickets are available the day of the tour at any of the homes or at the library. Cost is $5.

All proceeds will benefit Marion City Library, which is also sponsoring the tour.

 

Alexanderwohl plans holiday worship

 

The Alexanderwohl Menno­nite Church, one mile north of Goessel on Kansas Highway 15, will observe its traditional worship service on Thanksgiving Day from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

Karen Unruh will provide an organ prelude that will include “Sinfonia con tromba” by Giusepe Torelli, featuring Kyle Unruh on piccolo trumpet. Evan Fast, saxophone, will play the second movement of Lawson Lunde’s “Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano” for the offertory. s

Thanksgiving hymns, a message by Pastor Linda Ewert and opportunities for expressions of gratitude will be part of the one-hour service.

The public is invited.
