Andy Adrian wins a ball from a defender. He had a goal and an assist in a 7-3 win over Saint Mary.

After struggling to score for most of the first half of the season, the Tabor College men's soccer squad erupted for seven goals in its opening conference match, defeating Saint Mary 7-3 Saturday.

“The men were finally able to find the back of the net consistently,” coach Grant Brubacher said. “It was nice to get a solid lead and be able to spread out the playing time.”

Senior Silas Hibbs, and sophomore Marcos Bandeira scored two goals apiece. Junior Andy Adrian and freshmen Noah Collins and Alberto Scherer each had one goal apiece. For Scherer and Collins these were their first goals in the Bluejays uniform. Adrian, Hibbs, senior Ben Ruzinsky and freshmen Liam Mclean each notched one assist.

The Bluejays led 2-0 on Hibbs’ goals at outset, built a 5-0 halftime lead and never looked back.

Goalkeeper Aaron Schmucker had six saves as the Bluejays improved to 3-6 on the season.

The women’s side defeated Saint Mary 1-0, with the win snapping a KCAC losing streak that dated back to 2006. It was also the side’s first conference win under Brubacher.

“I am very proud of the women getting their first conference victory,” Brubacher said. “We had a great defensive effort to give us our first shutout of the season.”

Senior Kelly White scored the only goal of the match off a pass from junior Jessica Burden, and junior goalie Aubrey Whitehorn made it stand with had seven saves, earning her first shutout of the season.

The women improved to 2-6 on the season.

Coming—The Tabor men played Hillsdale Free Will Baptist after the press deadline Monday, winning 6-2.

Both teams host McPherson at 2 p.m. Oct. 8 in Hillsboro, but play the next three conference games on the road.

The Bluejays play night games at Bethany Saturday and at Southwestern Oct. 15. The Bluejays play afternoon games Oct. 18 at Ottawa and Oct. 20 in Hillsboro against Central Christian.
