Centre—The Cougars lost a competitive game against Wakefield 39-28 Friday. After Bryant Brunner scored on a 9-yard pass from Ben Krause, and Krause converted the 2-point run, Preston Cannizzo threw back-to-back touchdown passes: one a 59-yarder to Brandon Munger, the other a 33-yarder to Jacob Vernnon.

Centre trailed 24-8 at halftime but rallied in bang-bang fashion, scoring twice in 37 seconds. First Krause hammered in a 1-yard run, then Brunner scooped up a fumble, returning it eight yards for the score.

The conversion pass failed after Krause’s score, but Brunner hit Krause after the second, making it 24-22 with 7:22 left in the third.

But the fourth quarter belonged to Williams and Wakefield, who scored touchdowns at 6:05 and again at 0:03.

Brunner and the Cougars did not quit, capping the score on a kickoff return touchdown just ahead of the final horn.

Goessel—The Bluebirds moved their record to 4-0 with a 42-12 win over a tough Claflin team. Craig Banman scored five touchdowns—three receiving, two running.

Travis Fensky caught a touchdown pass in the second quarter, as Goessel’s speed overwhelmed the bigger Wildcats at most offensive and defensive positions.

The speed advantage turned into a 22-6 Bluebird lead in the second quarter.

Before halftime, with the Wildcats down to the 8-yard line, Cameron Stultz made a huge defensive play to intercept a pass in the endzone.

The Bluebird defense was as impressive as the offense was. Nathan Walker, Austin Cooper and Fensky controlled the line of scrimmage, freeing linebackers Weston Hiebert, Johnathan Berhkholz, Craig Banman, Austin Unruh and Kendall Voth to match up with Claflin’s receivers down field.

Next up, Goessel (2-0 district, 4-0 overall) will play another district game Friday at Stafford.

—Delbert Peters

Canton-Galva—Fairfield defeated the Eagles 28-14.

Peabody-Burns—Hutch Trinity defeated PBHS 51-6.
