n An estimated 900 people converged on downtown Hills­boro Sept. 4 for a city-wide celebration of the completion of the four-month, $800,000 Main Street renovation project. The city provided free hot dogs and sodas and the Hillsboro Com­munity Band and the Schniggle-Fritz Band performed. At about 8 p.m., City Administrator Steve Garrett flipped on the new street lights to a musical fanfare and the applause of onlookers.

n The Marion County Board of Commissioners addressed several unusual problems at its Monday meeting, including the discovery of medical waste dumped in a cistern on the courthouse grounds, cattle spooked by the Labor Day fireworks show at the county lake, and how fix the county lake’s dam to meet state requirements.

n Joel Smith recently opened a dental practice in Hillsboro through the Tippin Dental Group. He began seeing patients at the end of August.

n An inexperienced Hills­boro High School football team dropped its season opener to Haven, 31-6, at Reimer Field. Caleb Marsh scored the Trojans’ only touchdown.

n Marion High lost its football opener, 31-6 to Minneapolis. Tyson Heidebrecht scored the Warriors’ touchdown on a 45-yard return of a punt blocked by teammate Calvin Riggs.

n The HHS volleyball team went 1-3 at the Mid-Central Activities Association pre-season tournament in Hesston.

n The HHS cross-country team verified its No. 2 pre-season ranking in Class 3A with a comfortable team victory at Linds­borg on Thursday. Brothers Aaron and Daniel Yoder finished first and second in the junior-senior race.
