The Peabody-Burns volleyball team has eight returning seniors and letter-winners. They helped the Warriors go 4-1 in their season-opening tournament Aug. 30. Pictured are: back row (from left), Felecia Pohlman, Danielle Savage, Julie Wedel, Kaitlyn Preheim; middle row, Michaela Methvin, Embry Hodges; front row, Bayleigh Clark, Clarissa Terronez, Alex McDowell.

Darren Schroeder begins his seventh season at the helm of the Peabody-Burns volleyball program with a set of nine returners, four of whom contributed to the varsity a season ago where the Warriors finished 18-16 overall but just 2-9 in the Heart of America League.

“Ball control and passing will be a must if we are going to improve off of last season,” Schroeder said.

Setter Bayleigh Clark (5-foot-3) will be in the starting rotation for the fourth straight year and third at her position.

“She will be vital on how well we run our offense and our offensive consistency,” Schroeder said.

Juniors Danielle Savage, a 5-9 middle hitter, and Julie Wedel, a 5-8 outside hitter, will be relied on heavily in the team’s offensive attack, Schroeder said. Kaitlyn Preheim, a 5-5 junior, will return for her third season at libero.

“Serving should be a strength for this team,” Schroeder said. “If we can have our young girls step in and contribute and get adjusted to the system we should be competitive throughout the season.”

Junior Felecia Pohlman and sophomores Embry Hodges and Michaela Methvin all figure to be part of the Peabody-Burns rotation. Seniors Clarrisa Terronez and Alex McDowell will contribute to the defense.

The Warriors opened their season Aug. 30 with a home-court tournament.

Their next date will take them to Inman for a quadrangular with the home team, Sedgwick and Moundridge.
