At times known as “Mr. Music,” Herbert C. Richert was a pillar upon which Tabor College built its well-respected music program. During his career from 1935 to 1966 his musical influence went well beyond this institution. Richert’s primary focus was teaching and directing choral groups. He had a remarkable rapport with students, inspiring many with his charming personality. In addition to his focus on teaching, Richert edited or published many musical works, including the The Mennonite Brethren Church Hymnal in 1951. Richert’s teaching, choral directing and publications earned him many regional and national awards. In 1990 Tabor made public that it would name the future Worship and Performing Arts Center the Herbert C. Richert Auditorium.
