Jacob G. Ewert, described by P. C. Hiebert as "the wonderful man with a handicap," was professor of ancient and modern languages at Tabor College from 1914 to 1920. Ewert was a student of languages, having a mastery of German and English, and a reading and writing knowledge of Greek, Latin, Hebrew and nearly all languages of Europe. Paralyzed and having only limited use of his right arm, Ewert was editor and feature writer for the Hillsboro newspaper, Vorwaerts (Forward), wrote a spiritual pilgrimage book, and submitted innumerable applications for food drafts for starving people in Europe before his death in March of 1923. So spectacular were the achievements of this amazing man, that Ewert was recognized in Ripley's Believe It or Not (shown here, circa 1923).
