Two Hillsboro businesses were among three in Marion County and 33 in southcentral Kansas Friday to receive a 2008 Kansas Department of Commerce Business Appreciation Award.
Circle D Corp. was recognized in the manufacturing category while Elcon Services Inc. was feted in the service category.
Western Associates Inc. of Marion also was recognized in the service category.
Each June, as part of “Business Appreciation Month,” KDOC recognizes businesses for contributions made to their respective communities.
The two Hillsboro business were nominated for the award by Hillsboro Development Corp.
Circle D Corp. began manufacturing livestock and flatbed trailers in 1987.
The company markets its products through distributors located primarily in the western states.
About 90 percent of its sales are outside of the state.
Since its inception, Circle D has supported the Hillsboro community. Members of the management team have served on the Hillsboro City Council and the local hospital board of directors as well as participating in civic, school and church activities.
“Circle D is one of Hillsboro’s strong and stable companies,” said Clint Seibel, HDC executive director. “Their reputation for product quality and durability has brought positive recognition to the company and to our community.
“Their low employee-turnover rate speaks volumes as to the loyalty they develop within the workforce.
“We appreciate their outstanding service to Hillsboro and the surrounding community.”
Elcon Services Inc. is the largest electrical contractor in Hillsboro and Marion County. The majority of its work is commercial, industrial and oilfield related.
Begun in 1963 as a general partnership, Elcon Services Inc. was incorporated in 1971. It currently employs more than a dozen people.
“Elcon’s expertise in the electrical services industry, along with the quality of service offered, has resulted in significant growth in their business over the past five years,” Seibel said.
The company is constructing a 7,500-square-foot warehouse and office complex in the Hillsboro Heights development to accommodate its growth.
Elcon Services Inc. personnel have served on the Marion County Fair board and Main Street Ministries board.
“Elcon Services Inc. is to be commended for their high quality work and service to Hillsboro and Marion County,” Seibel said.
