The PEAK—Promote Excell­ent Alternatives in Kansas—awards program began in 2002 to recognize and encourage nursing homes to move away from the institutional model of care to a person-centered model with residents having more control over their activities and schedules.

Since then, more than 40 homes have been honored, some more than once. Facilities must submit an application for consideration for the honor.

Kathy Greenlee, secretary of the Kansas Department on Aging, will present the awards on site this summer.

Joining Parkside Homes as a PEAK award winner this year were Atchison Senior Village, Atchison; Brandon Woods Retirement Community, Lawrence; Brewster Place, Topeka; Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook; Cheney Golden Age Home, Cheney; Greeley County Long-Term Care Unit, Tribune; Johnson County Nursing Center, Olathe; Minne­apolis Good Samaritan Center, Minneapolis; and Village Shalom, Overland Park.
