The Second Century Endowment Foundation for Newton Public Library will host the 15th annual Newton-North Newton Flower & Garden Tour to benefit Newton Public Library.

The tour will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 8. Tickets will be available for a $5 donation at Newton Public Library, Harvest Greenhouse, Flowers by Ruzen and Newton Dillons Stores, or at the tour gardens during the tour.

Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Newton Public Library.

Harvey County master gardeners will be available during the tours to answer questions about the gardens.

The tour will include the follow gardens:

• Jim Friesen, 404 E. 9th, Newton. Friesen has done a lot with a little space around his bungalow, featuring mostly perennials. He has experimented to find plants that thrive in Kansas conditions and played with combinations of plant size, texture, and color.

• Dewayne and Betty Pauls, 6 Hickory Court, Newton. Beginning with lots of trees and a lovely lawn, the Pauls have added five flower beds, each with a different theme or type of flower.

• Cyril and Gerre Brown, 2219 W. First, Newton. With a landscaped plan as a beginning, the Browns have added 21 different types of trees and, since retirement, have endeavored to add a new bed each year, experimenting with what thrives and flourishes.

• Kauffman Museum Farmstead, W. 27th & Main, North Newton. Kauffman Museum has an immigrant garden as part of the complex. This is a vegetable and flower garden typical of what first-generation Mennonite immigrants from Poland, Prussia, Ukraine and Germany would have planted after their large migration between the years of 1874 and 1894.

The Second Century Endow­ment Foundation was founded in 1986 upon the celebration of the first century of operation of Newton’s public library.

The mission of the SCF is to enhance the adult collection and services of Newton Public Library by increasing and promoting educational, literary and artistic resources available to the community.
