Numerous awards and scholarships involving the Hillsboro High School Class of 2008 were announced during commencement on May 18.

Co-winners of the John A. and Harriet Kizler Wiebe Good Citizen Scholarship were Meghan Jost and Maria Loewen. Each student will receive a scholarship of $3,000 to assist them with their college education.

The scholarship was established with an initial endowment of $200,000 in 1991 by HHS alums John and Harriet Wiebe to honor the faculty and graduating seniors in the class of 1941.

In addition to the two winners, the field of nine finalists included Mathew Brown, Spencer Brown, Alex Jost, Jenesa Klose, Jessica Klose, Amber Loewen, Maria Loewen and Jandi Loewen.

Following is the list of other awards that were announced.

 

CLASS OF 2008 AWARDS

  • President’s Award for Educational Excellence (cumulative grade-point average of 3.5, and scoring at or above the 85 percentile on the ACT in reading or math): Corissa Bartel, Chelsea Bebermeyer, Mathew Brown, Spencer Brown, Amanda Faber, Courtney Fast, Benjamin Heyen, Meghan Jost, Lauren Just, Amber King, Lance Kliewer, Jenesa Klose, Jessica Klose, Mitchell Koop, Amber Loewen, Julia Loewen, Maria Loewen, Jandi Nikkel, Mark Prieb, Grant Schneider, David Vogel, Audrey Weinbrenner.

  • Kansas State Scholars (meet Board of Regents curriculum requirements, a composite GPA of 3.9 and an average ACT score of 29): Mathew Brown, Spencer Brown, Amanda Faber, Courtney Fast, Benjamin Heyen, Meghan Jost, Jenesa Klose, Jessica Klose, Julia Loewen, Maria Loewen, Frankie Martin, Caitlin Reimer, Grant Schneider.

  • Board of Regents Certificate of Recognition (completed four units of English, three units of math, science, and social studies, two units of foreign language and one unit of computer technology: Mathew Brown, Spencer Brown, Amanda Faber, Courtney Fast, Benjamin Heyen, Meghan Host, Jenesa Klose, Jessica Klose, Julia Loewen, Maria Loewen, Frankie Martin, Caitlin Reimer, Grant Schneider.

  • Kansas ACT Scholars (scored 32 or higher out of a possible 36 on the ACT): Corissa Bartel, Matthew Brown, Amanda Faber.

  • C.M. Sextro Academic Scholarship on Math ($1,250): Mathew Brown.

  • USD 410 Hillsboro Education Associa­tion Scholarship ($100): Corissa Bartel, Amber Loewen Anna Woelk.

  • Marion County Farm Bureau Scholarships ($500): Mark Prieb.

  • American Legion Post 366, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion ($250): Mitchell Koop, Jandi Nikkel, Gavin Serene.

  • Hillsboro Community Medical Center ($500): Meghan Jost.

  • Dale Dennis Excellence in Education Award ($200): Chelsea Bebermeyer.

  • Paul Rundstrom Memorial Scholarship ($500, senior member of the golf team): Justin Kent.

  • Hillsboro Evening Lions Club ($500): Cody McMillen, Caitlin Reimer.

  • Leo Club ($250): Mathew Brown, Amber King, Cody McMillen, David Vogel, Anna Woelk.

  • Earl Wineinger Memorial Scholarship ($500, Marion County senior preparing for agricultural career): Tyrell Goossen.

  • Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Citizenship Award ($250): Jessica Klose, Spencer Brown.

  • Kansas Board of Regents Vocational Education Scholars ($500): Kevin Tidwell.
