Sterling’s one-two punch of Steven Fankhauser and Kaleb Humphreys proved to be too much for the Hillsboro boys to overcome. The Black Bears edged the Trojans by four points to win the Mid-Central Activities Association meet title in Lindsborg on Friday.

Sterling finished with 102 points, with Hillsboro following at 98 and Marion in third at 75.

The two Sterling standouts won a total five individual running events events. Fankhauser prevailed in the 100, 200 and 400, while Humphreys outdueled Cody McMillen in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Hillsboro’s Jacob Yoder finished third to the Sterling speedster and Lyons’ R. Biehler in the 100 and 200.

In the 100, Fankhauser crossed in 10.85 seconds, Biehler in 11.17 and Yoder in 11.26. In the 200 it was Fankhauser in 22.42, Biehler in 22.45 and Yoder in 22.91.

Yoder did set a new school record in the 200 preliminaries with a time of 22.6, breaking the record he and older brother Alan shared at 22.8.

Fankhauser won the 400 in 49.87, with Hillsboro’s Ishmael Morris crossing second in 51:46 and Nathan Vogel third in 52.32.

In the distance showdown, Humphreys won the 1,600 in 4:37.00, edging McMillen at 4:38.72. In the 3,200, Humphreys crossed in 10:06.50 with McMillen following at 10:24.64.

The Trojans did have a perfect day in the relays, winning at all three distances.

The 4x100 team of Grant Schneider, Morris, Spencer Brown and Yoder crossed in 44.54, edging Lyons by 0.3 seconds.

The 4x400 team of Yoder, McMillen, Morris and Vogel took first in 3:32.73, with a 1.5-second edge over Smoky Valley.

In the 4x800, Nick Mueller, Matt Klenda, McMillen and Vogel won in 8:22.34, edging Marion by about 2.5 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Hillsboro girls finished a distant ninth in the field of 12 teams. Smoky Valley rolled up 110 point to win the title by 0.75 points over Hesston. Marion placed third with 89 points. Hillsboro scored 27.

Dakota Kaufman won the Trojans’ only gold medal, continuing her success in the triple jump with a distance of 36 feet, 8 inches.

Kaufman placed third in the long jump, and joined with Carmen Hawkinson, Shelby Koons and Tiffany Rooker to place third in the 4x100 for Hillsboro’s next-best finishes.

Coming—The Trojans will be seeking berths at the state track meet when they travel to Marion for the regional meet. Joining Hillsboro and Marion in the field will be Northern Heights, Belle Plaine, Conway Springs, Council Grove, Mission Valley, Garden Plain, Southeast of Saline, Halstead, Sacred Heart, Sedgwick, Remington, Wichita Collegiate, Wichita Independent and Wichita Trinity.
