Justin Kent and Daniel Kunantaev finished 1-2 as Hillsboro played host and placed first at its 3A regional golf tournament.
Kent and Kunantaev both shot 76 and led their 4-man team to a score of 347, a baker’s dozen ahead of second-place Beloit (360).
Gavin Serene’s 98 and Daniel Dick’s 97 filled out the top four spots, with Jake Kenney (102) and Jared King (113) completing Hillsboro’s card.
Kent and Kunantaev matched each other shot for shot and got off to a fast start. Both birdied the par-4 second hole, and their strong play carried through the front nine.
Hillsboro’s top-2 shot 36 and 37, respectively, and led Beloit’s Matt Pestinger and Dalton Schoen by a dozen at the midpoint.
Kunantaev finished almost as well as he began, and was the only golfer present to finish the back nine under 40.
Coming—Hillsboro caps its season at the 3A state meet Monday in Salina. Marion placed five golfers in the top seven and took first place at Osage City to secure a berth of its own at Salina.
A recap of Marion’s performance at the Osage City regional will be posted to the Free Press Web site when results are received.
