Board OKs curriculum order exceeding budget PDF Print E-mail

Unified School District 410 Board of Education granted approval Monday evening to purchas upgraded reading curriculum for all grade levels at a cost not to exceed $112,000.

Superintendent Doug Huxman said although the amount “significantly” exceeds current budget allocations, the curriculum purchase is necessary.

Greg Brown, principal of Hillsboro Middle School who presented the request, said the amount includes intervention materials to facilitate students reaching grade reading level and shipping costs.

The board also discussed established policies regarding use of the district’s moveable bleachers.

The Florence Labor Day committee has asked to use these bleachers and well as the set owned by Tabor College.

Among the board member’s concerns were assembly, transport and liability of its bleachers. They agreed the district should provide the manpower to transport and assemble/disassemble with the costs covered by a billable fee.

The board asked Keith Goossen, director of transportation and maintenance, to figure a per hour rate, costs for securing a vehicle plus a mileage fee.

Huxman reported that work is proceeding on the facility projects, although the contractors say the they are significantly behind because of the weather.

Huxman said an estimated $17,200 will be needed to convert the copy room at the elementary school to a student rest room for the nurse’s office, and that he gave the go ahead for the project so it will be completed this summer.

In response to concerns about safety issues in the playground area used by Head Start students, Huxman said one estimate for repairs runs at $9,500.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen,” said Evan Yoder, Hillsboro Elementary School principal about the situation.

Huxman said other options to remedy the situation will be explored.

Goossen reported on several facility and transportation items.

He said a number of vehicles received hail damage, although he hadn’t received the dollar amount yet. He also said someone was coming Tuesday to check for hail damage on the roofs.

In other business, the board:

n heard reports board members Mark Rooker on TEEN and Debbie Geis on Marion County Special Education Cooperative. Geis said CLASS will be moving to Peabody, which will resolve accessibility issues for its students.

n approved renewal of teaching contracts for the next school year, which granted tenure to two teachers, Sonya Roberts and Keli Chisholm.

n voted to offer tenure beginning May 1 to Elynne Wiebe, who was tenured out of state.

n approved an amended and restated USD 410/Tabor College interlocal agreement.

Huxman said the changes have to do with ownership and disbursement of property in response to questions raised by Raymond Brandt’s attorney.

n received a thank-you note from April Young, who received some funding from the board to attend the FCCLA convention this summer.

n met in executive sessions to discuss a student, personnel matters, employer/employee negotiations and acquisition of property, and to consult with the district’s attorney.
