The Hillsboro tennis season ended Thursday at the regional tournament it hosted at the Sports Complex.
The two Trojan entries in singles, Clay Shewey and Mark Prieb, fell one victory short of qualifying for state, losing in the quarterfinals. The top four finishers move on.
Shewey, who made it to state a year ago, shut out Republic County’s Trenton Colburn, 6-0, 6-0, in the opening round before losing to Kevin Davis of Ellsworth, 2-6, 1-6 in his next outing.
“Clay unfortunately wasn’t was sharp as he was a few weeks ago when he beat Davis, 8-3,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “Both were state qualifiers last year and today Clay just didn’t play as well as David did.”
Prieb, meanwhile, defeated Alex Lesperance of Hutchinson Trinity in the first round, 6-2, 6-0, then dropped a 1-6, 0-6 match to Mike Jaderston of Sterling.
In doubles, Hillsboro’s two entries were eliminated in the first round.
Taylor Hagen and Ben Heyen lost to Britton and Sweet of Sterling, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6, while Jarod Hamm and Mathew Brown lost to Thomas and Detter of Ellinwood, 3-6, 0-6.
“Our doubles teams had a hard time maintaining the solid, consistent play that they’ve had the last three meets,” Holmes said.
“Taylor and Ben started a little shaky and got down 1-4, but came storming back to win the first set. The second set could have gone either way, but we ended up losing it 4-6 and the guys couldn’t seem to get the momentum back and also lost the last set.
“Mathew and Jarod played some good tennis and were even with the eventual third-place team for the first five or six games. But when our play dropped off, they ended up losing.”
Holmes was pleased with the leadership exhibited by his three seniors during the season.
“Mathew Brown, Ben Heyen and Mark Prieb have all given a great effort this year,” he said. “They are all excellent students as well as young men who have many outstanding characteristics.”
