Sometimes it takes a stranger to tell you how fortunate you are. That seems to be the case with the news that Hillsboro’s Peter Paul Loewen House was selected among the 24 finalists in the “8 Wonders of Kansas Architecture” contest sponsored by the Kansas Sampler Foundation.
We’ve known for some time that the historic structure, known for years as the Adobe House, is one of very few, if any, clay-brick pioneer homes still standing, not just in Kansas but the entire country. Even so, we confess we didn’t even think of it as “wonder”-ful architecture until we saw the news release.
Now that we know, we kind of like the idea. In fact, we encourage people in Hillsboro and greater Marion County to get out and vote for the local landmark, whether on line at www.8wonders.org, or by paper ballot(s) that you can pick up at the local museum visitors center. We know we have a winner... now. Let’s make it official. —DR
