Hillsboro High School instrumental and vocal groups received high marks at state music contests this month.

The Trojan Band came within five points—two points from one judge and three from another—from getting all “I” ratings from the three judges at the state large-group contest April 16 at Lindsborg.

“This is the closest our band has gotten to a ‘I’ at state large group contest in 10 years,” director Gregg Walker said.

Receiving a ‘I’ rating at the state solo and ensemble contest April 26 at Southeast of Saline were: Katrina Muzyka, alto saxophone; J. Michael Hiebert, snare drum; Percussion Ensemble (Mitchell Koop, Elise Heyen, J. Michael Hiebert, Jarod Hamm).

At the regional solo/ensemble contest April 12 in Hillsboro, the following received a ‘I’ rating: Katrina Muzyka, alto sax solo; J. Michael Hiebert, snare drum solo; and Percussion Ensemble (Clay Shewey, Elise Heyen, J. Michael Hiebert, Mitchell Koop, Jarod Hamm).

Receiving a ‘II’ at regionals were: Clarinet Ensemble, Woodwind Trio, Ashlyn Simmons, clarinet solo; Jarod Hamm, snare drum solo; Spencer Brown, tuba solo; Sara Jones, flute solo;

Receiving a ‘III” at regionals were: Brass Ensemble; Matthew Wiebe, trumpet solo; and Kimberly Brown, trumpet solo.

All HHS ensembles received I ratings: Spirit-N-Celebration, SNC Men's Ensemble, SNC Women's Ensemble, Sophomore Girls Quartet, and the Freshman/Sophomore Mixed Ensemble.

Soloists receiving I ratings were Kimberly Brown, Dylan Delk, Nolan Dirks, Ben Heyen, Lauren Just, Julia Loewen, Maria Loewen, David Vogel and Nathan Vogel.

Soloists receiving II ratings were Cassie Kroeker, Kelsey Unruh, Carly Weisbeck and Audrey Weinbrenner.
