The Tabor College women’s track and field team had a banner day at the Southwestern Relays Saturday in Winfield. Led by seniors Heidi Schmidt and Amber Wiens the Bluejays set three new school records.

“After a season of long and hard training, it really came together for a number of athletes Saturday,” coach Dave Kroeker said.

Kroeker said that Schmidt and Wiens, who placed 1-2 in the 1,500 meter run, both outstripped the school record and provided the highlight of the meet.

Schmidt notched a new personal record six seconds faster than her previous best in 4:54.01 and Wiens stopped the clock at 4:58.50.

“Amber has battled back from injury and just was trying to be competitive and ran just a tremendous race herself,” Kroeker said.

Freshman Liz Kleinsasser (2:19.07, 3rd) ran the fastest 800 in Tabor history.

Kleinsasser then teamed up with Kelli Kopper, Andrea Batista, and Shelby Miller in the 4x400 relay. The group not only lowered their school record time—set one week ago at the KU Relays—to 4:03.40, but also sprinted past archrival Southwestern to claim first place.

On the men's side, season-best performances included the following: Brent Nelson (51.50, 10th) in the 400; Zac Remboldt (1:59.91, 6th), Caleb Schroeder (2:01.18, 8th), and Adam McPeck (2:02.41, 10th) in the 800; Tim Funk (16.48, 4th) in the 110m hurdles; and Dan Sigley (10:41.52, 2nd) in the 3,000 steeplechase.

Matt Vaughn improved his personal record by ten feet in the hammer throw (129-00, 9th).

Andrew Topham, Peabody, placed first in the 5,000 for Southwestern with a time of 15:34.17.

Coming—The KCAC championship will be held at Friends this weekend.

Field events start at 2 p.m. Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday Running events start at 5 p.m. both days.

“This is the weekend that we as a team have been looking forward to since January when practice started,” Kroeker said. “It looks like we are peaking at just the right time.”
