Halstead losses drop Hillsboro to 1-3 for week and 5-5 for season

Hillsboro dropped both ends of a home-field doubleheader to Halstead on Friday, 9-6 and 14-6.
The losses capped a 1-3 week and evened Hillsboro’s season record at 5-5.
In the opener, Halstead erupted for five runs in the third inning against Hillsboro starter Jacob Edwards to grab a 5-2 lead.
The Trojans came back with a run in the third inning and added two more in the fourth to trail 6-5. After a scoreless fifth, the Dragons scored two runs in the sixth on a pair of hits, a walk and a Hillsboro error.
In the bottom of the inning, the Trojans got a double from Isaac Leihy, who scored on a fielder’s choice to pull to within 8-6. But Halstead added an insurance run in the seventh, then shut down Hillsboro in its last at-bat to secure the win.
Edwards (1-2) absorbed the loss, giving up six runs in 41⁄3 innings. He allowed only three hits, but walked nine batters while striking out seven.
Leihy went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Trojans and scored three times. But Hillsboro managed only six hits against Halstead’s Matt Pjesky, who struck out eight and walked only two for a complete-game victory.
In Game 2, Halstead scored at least one run in every inning en route to the 14-6 clubbing.
Leihy (2-1) started on the mound for Hillsboro, but surrendered nine runs—six of them earned—before being relieved with no one out in the fifth and a 9-4 deficit.
Halstead added four more runs in the sixth against Devin Funk on the way to securing a comfortable win.
Edwards and Jost each contributed two hits to lead Hillsboro.
As a team, the Trojans drew eight walks against Halstead starter Kyle Boulet, but managed only one hit in 32⁄3 innings. The Trojans scored four runs.
Against freshman reliever Colin Rupp, the Trojans banged out seven hits but scored only two runs. Rupp walked only one batter in 31⁄3 innings of work.
Hoisington—Hillsboro combined five strong innings of pitching from freshman Dylan Delk with opportunistic hitting to beat Hoisington 12-3 and earn a split of their doubleheader at Memorial Field last Tuesday.
The Cardinals, aided by eight walks and seven Trojan errors, won Game 1, 12-4.
To their credit, the young Trojans rebounded from an ugly first game to dominate Hoisington in the nightcap.
Hillsboro scored two runs without a base hit in the bottom of the first inning, then exploded for six more in the second to grab an 8-1 lead. Jacob Edwards, Aaron Bina, Tyler Ediger, Jacob Fish and Isaac Leihy all delivered RBI hits in the uprising. Leihy’s hit went for two bases and drove in two runs.
That was more than enough run support for Delk (2-0), who threw five complete innings and gave up three runs on six hits. He struck out three Cardinals and walked four.
Daniel Jost went 3-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Ediger also went 3-for-2. He drove in two runs and scored one.
In Game 1, Hillsboro led 1-0 after one inning, but three Cardinal hits, including a home run, plus two Trojan errors enabled Hoisington to score five times in the second inning. Three Hillsboro errors contributed to two more Cardinal runs in the third as Hoisington built a 7-2 lead.
Hillsboro scored two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-4. But the Cardinals roughed up Ethan Frantz, Matt Martin and Devin Funk for five runs in the seventh to win by a comfortable margin. Hillsboro committed two errors in the inning.
Jacob Fish (0-2) absorbed the loss for Hillsboro, giving up seven runs—five of them earned—in four full innings.
Jost led the Trojan attack with three hits in four at-bats and scored twice. Leihy and Fish each added two hits to account for all seven Hillsboro hits against Justin Axman, who went the distance for Hoisington.
Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to take its 5-5 record into a home-field doubleheader Tuesday against Little River, which is in its inaugural season of baseball.
On Friday, Hillsboro will play at Lyons with a 4:30 p.m. start to the scheduled doubleheader.
