For the second time in two meets, both the Hillsboro girls’ and boys’ track teams placed third in a five-team Central Kansas Track League meet, this time at Hesston on April 8.

The girls finished with 43 points, trailing Hesston with 131 and Halstead with 47, but ahead of Berean Academy with 34 and Goessel with 21.

Dakota Kaufman won Hillsboro’s only gold medal by soaring 35 feet, 61⁄2 inches in the triple jump. She defeated her nearest competitor by 4 feet, 8 inches. She also placed second in the long jump with a season’s best leap of 15-111⁄4.

Chelsea Bebermeyer brought home a pair of silver medals with a throw of 114-10 in the discus and 34-51⁄2 in the shot put.

Also finishing second were: Jet Skiles, javelin (80-10), Tiffany Rooker, pole vault (8-0), the 4x100 team of Bethany Hawkinson, Carmen Hawkinson, Shelby Koons and Rooker (54.90) and the 4x400 team of Kaufman, Clara Ens, Bethany Hawkinson and Rooker (4:37.33).

Goessel’s best finish came in the 1,600, where Aspen Frey won the race in 6:07.80. She also placed second in the 800 (2:43.09).

The Trojan boys, meanwhile, finished with 51 points. Hesston won with 90, followed by Halstead with 61.5, Hillsboro, Berean 48.5 and Goessel 25.

Jacob Yoder and David Loewen won the only individual gold medals for HHS. Yoder won the 100 (11.9) while Loewen took first in discus (136-1).

Hillsboro also won two of three relays. The 4x400 team of Grant Schneider, Nathan Vogel, Cody McMillen and Ishmael Morris crossed first in 3:35.14 while the 4x800 team of Nick Mueller, Matthew Klenda, McMillen and Vogel won by a 20-second margin in 8:43.17.

Goessel’s Craig Banman won the only gold for the Bluebirds with a time of 41.46 in the 300-meter hurdles. Teammate Weston Hiebert finished right behind him (43.51).

Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to compete Tuesday in a CKTL quint at Wichita Independent, then will travel to Halstead on Friday for the Conrad Nightingale Invitational. Events will begin at 3 p.m.

The Smoky Valley Invitational meet was postponed Friday due to cold and wet weather and has been rescheduled for Monday.

“This current weather pattern takes a toll on the athletes, who not only have to train but also compete outside each day,” Hillsboro coach Dennis Boldt said.

“I am extremely pleased with our athletes’ focus, and appreciate their hard work and dedication—although I know they are looking for some sunshine and warmer weather.”
