Hillsboro and Marion dominated the 10-school Hillsboro Invitational Golf Tournament at the Municipal Golf Course on Friday.

Hillsboro’s Justin Kent and Daniel Kunantaev shot 75 and 76, respectively, to finish 1-2 as individuals and post a 21-stroke victory in the two-man competition.

Marion took the next three individual places with a 79 by Jake Bredemeier and 80s by Keith Jones and Luke Gordon to pace the Warriors to team victories in the four-man and six-man divisions.

With an 89 by Gavin Serene, 91 by Daniel Dick, 96 by Jared King and 108 by Jake Kenney, Hillsboro placed fifth in the four-man race at 384. Combined with the scores by Kent and Kunantaev, the Trojans posted the second-best six-man score (535).

The Warriors complemented their top three individual scores with a 90 by Lindsay Hett, 92 by Landon Leiker and 98 by Olle Genfors to give Marion a 519 total for six-man play. Hett and Genfors placed fourth (188) in the two-man race.

Area teams Centre and Goessel also competed at Hillsboro.

The Cougars placed fifth in six-man at 590, fourth in four-man at 362 and ninth in two-man at 228.

Jacob Jennings shot an 85 to place 10th individually and Tyler Klenda shot an 87 to place 14th. Also competing for Centre were Heath Hill (93), Adam Matz (97), Josh Olsen (102) and Kacey Hanschu (126).

Goessel was led by Derek Brown and Tyler Schmidt, who both shot an 85 to finish eighth and ninth, respectively. Hayden Goerzen added an 87 to finish 15th, Cameron Voth shot 88 and Jake Schrag 89. Nathan Ensz posted an 89 but was disqualified.

Schmidt and Goerzen combined for a 172 to place second in the two-man race. With Ensz disqualified, Goessel did not post a four-man or six-man score.

In addition to the four Marion County schools, the field included Bennington, Chapman, Halstead, Hesston, Minneapolis and St. Johns Military.

Lyons—Hillsboro opened its 2008 season with the second-best team score at the eight-school Lyons Invitational on April 1.

Daniel Kunantaev paced the Trojans with a 77, three strokes behind top medalist Tanner George of Nickerson. Right behind Kunantaev was teammate Justin Kent with an 81.

Rounding out Hillsboro’s scoring were Daniel Dick, who placed 32nd in the 48-player field with a 99, Jake Kenney, 35th at 102, Jared King, 39th at 107 and Gavin Serene, 40th at 107.

Team scores were determined by a school’s top-four players. Hillsboro’s 359 was 14 strokes behind Nickerson and tied the Trojans with Hoisington.

Coming—Hillsboro varsity won’t compete again until April 18, when the Trojans travel to the Wichita Collegiate Invitational at Hidden Lakes.

Marion will compete April 14 at Council Grove.
