The Tabor College men’s and women’s track teams traveled to windy Wichita on the last weekend of spring break to participate in the Friends Invitational.
For the women, Tasia Johnson ran in her first meet of the year and turned in a national provisional standard qualifying mark of 12.28 seconds in the 100-meter dash.
Breanna Wray increased her own school record with a hammer throw of 147 feet, 6 inches.
The Bluejays set a new school record in the 4x100. Members Johnson, Jennifer Schmidt, Andrea Batista and Tamara Steward moved the baton around the track in 49.50.
Shelby Miller (61.54) won the 400 and Kelli Kopper (63.51) ran second in that event.
“It’s always hard to come back to compete after being away from campus for over a week and be really ready to go, but several TC athletes did turn in stellar performances,” coach Dave Kroeker said.
Notable men’s performances included the 800-meter race run by Justin Ball (2:00.56), who edged Southwestern’s defending conference champion Aric Cherry (2:00.58) at the tape.
Andrew Schroter (57.80) won the 400 hurdles and Andrew Covin placed second in both the 200 (22.22) and 400 (52.29).
“All in all it was good to get back to competition for both teams,” Kroeker said. “We will have several opportunities to improve our performances over the next couple of weeks.”
Andrew Topham, Peabody native now at Southwestern, finished second in the 5,000 (16:20.84) to teammate Daniel Joiner (16:20.83).
Coming—The ACCK championship meet is set for Saturday at Bethel, with Tabor’s home meet to follow on April 16. In four weeks Tabor returns to Friends for the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship meet.
