After traveling on foot more than 1,500 miles from San Francisco, the Northern Route of the Longest Walk 2 was scheduled to arrive in Kansas Tuesday, April 8, as participants continue their journey across the nation.

The Northern Route will follow U.S. Highway 50 into Syracuse from Colorado, and participants will then be hosted by Kansans across the state through April.

The Longest Walk 2 began Feb. 11 to bring attention to the environmental disharmony of Mother Earth, sacred site issues, and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original longest walk.

Longest Walk 2 participants are carrying out simultaneous north and south routes that together combine more than 6,000 miles across the country.

The two groups will converge in Washington, D.C., July 11, where they will meet with U.S. Congressional members.

Organizers from Kansas will meet the Longest Walk 2 North route as participants cross the border near Syracuse on April 8.

The walkers will stay at Syracuse for two days, sharing stories and learning about environmental issues that most concern Kansans.

Longest Walk 2 participants will stay in Kansas communities along U.S. 50, including Garden City, Dodge City, Wichita, Newton, Lawrence and Kansas City, where public events will be held nightly.

The stop in Newton is scheduled for April 18. Walkers will continue to Florence the next day, and to Strong City on April 20.

Walk organizers invite the public to join in community events and encourage citizens to walk with the group.

The group consists of Indigenous peoples from North, South and Central America, as well as people from Europe and Asia.
