Lee Leiker to speak at Chat and Dine

Lee Leiker will be the guest speaker at Chat and Dine beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at the South Lake Hall.

All lake residents and families, past and present, are invited to attend. Please bring a covered dish and personal table service.

Hillsboro preschool to open enrollment

Hillsboro Preschool will hold an enrollment application fair from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 14 in the Hillsboro preschool room. Refreshments will be provided.

Parents with children who will be 3 or 4 during the 2008-09 school year are invited to attend. Bring a copy of immunization records, social security card, medical card, birth certificate and income verification.

Poetry reading to be April 1 in Hillsboro

A poetry reading will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 at Olde Towne Underground.

The public is invited to attend to listen and to share. Bring original work or your favorite poet’s work.

USD 397 to offer district screenings

Centre Unified School District 397 will conducted 4-year-old and kindergarten screenings in April.

The 4-year-old screening will take place Tuesday afternoon, April 8, at Centre Elementary School in Lost Springs. Children must be 4 by Aug. 31 to participate.

The kindergarten screening will be Friday morning, April 11, at Centre Elementary School. Children must be 5 by Aug. 31 to participate.

Poetry reading to be April 1 in Hillsboro

Centre High School FFA will hold a Red Cross Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 11 at the Centre High School Gymnasium.

The public is invited to attend. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to make an appointment.

GHS to host league art show April 2

Goessel High School will host the Heart of America League Art Festival Wednesday, April 2. The exhibit will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. and from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.

July Fourth button contest ends April 30

The Peabody July 4th Celebration Society is holding a July Fourth button design contest until April 30.

Designs must be hand drawn to fit a 21⁄4 inch circle, no clip art and should be in three colors: red, blue and black. Please include the following information in the design: Peabody, 2008, 4th Fest or 4th of July.

Submit entries to Peabody July 4th Celebration Society, P.O. Box 74, Peabody, KS 66866. Include entrant’s name, address and phone number.

Quilt Guild to meet April 7 at HUMC

Country Stitchers Quilt Guild will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 7 at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church. Charlotte Wolfe from Charlotte’s Sew Natural in Newton will be the guest speaker. Bring a pastel fat quarter to the meeting.

Arboretum to host two seminars

Dyck Arboretum of the Plains in Hesston will continue the 2008 Garden Trends Series April 8 and 15 with seminars on gardening with native and low-maintenance plants.

Arboretum horticulturist Scott Vogt will host Gardening in Small Spaces at 7 p.m. April 8. Vogt will explain how to turn small or problem areas into gardens that are both beautiful and functional.

Vogt will host Habitat Gardens at 7 p.m. April 15. Vogt will show how to create habitat gardens that incorporate plants that are beautiful throughout the year and also provide shelter for “winged friends.”

The cost for each class is $12.50 for members and $15 for non-members.

Attendees will receive an additional 5 percent discount for the FloraKansas Native Plant Sale on May 10-12.

Centre band/vocal concert April 10

Centre Junior High and High School will present a band and vocal concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10 at the main gym at Centre High School. The public is invited to attend.

Melissa Bartel to speak at MOPs

Mothers of Preschoolers will meet from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro. Guest speaker Melissa Bartel will speak on simplicity in the kitchen.

Young mothers of the community are invited for visiting and food. Childcare is provided. For mothers who have never attended, the first meeting is free.

Men’s chorus announces schedule

The Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus, now in its 40th season and under the new leadership of director Greg Bontrager, announces its spring concert schedule.

The group will perform at 7 p.m. April 11 at the Meadowlark Building on the state fairgrounds for the MCC Relief Sale, at 7 p.m. April 13 at Memorial Hall at Bethel College in North Newton, and at 7 p.m. April 20 at Presser Hall at Bethany College in Lindsborg.

The Newton Community Children’s Choir, under the direction of Brenda Bartel, will join KMMC for the North Newton and Lindsborg concerts.

Countywide Earth Day April 9 at MES

The annual Earth Day Celebration for all Marion County 6th-graders, including home-schooled students, will be from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9 at Marion Elementary School. It is for all sixth-grade students in the county, plus home-schooled students.

The event will feature the Earth Balloon from Earth Adventure, a rainfall simulator, stream trailer and stations about fisheries, wildlife management, native plants, fresh water mussels and farm crops.

Participating agencies and organizations are Natural Resources Conservation Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Farm Bureau, Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy and Earth Adventure.

Last game night will be April 6 in Tampa

The Tampa Community Association will hold its last game night of the season at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 6 at the senior center. Please bring a snack to share.
