Against stiff competition on a chilly day, the Hillsboro tennis team finished third among four teams at the Conway Springs Quad on Thursday.

The home team claimed the championship with 30 points, followed by McPherson with 20, Hillsboro with 9 and Circle with 3 points.

In a round-robin format, the Trojans managed one victory in three of the four divisions.

In No. 1 singles, Clay Shewey lost 6-8 to Ethan Wagoner of McPherson, 3-8 to Mitchell Kibbe of Conway Springs then beat Will Peterson of Circle 8-2.

In No. 1 doubles, the Trojans’ Ben Heyen and Taylor Hagen lost to Austin Russell and Parker Miller of McPherson 3-8, lost to Kody Koester and Andrew Devlin of Conway Springs 0-8, then defeated Ryan Coffman and Tyler Schiesser of Circle 8-1.

In No. 2 singles, Nolan Dirks lost to Josh Lakes of McPherson 4-8, Stratton Lange of Conway Springs 1-8 and Kevin Smith of Circle 4-8.

In No. 2 doubles, Mathew Brown and Mark Prieb of Hillsboro lost to Tyler Singleton and Corey Horton of McPherson 2-8 and to Matt Pauly and Michael Devlin of Conway Springs 4-8, then defeated Kyle Brady and Kyle Wilson of Circle 8-4.

“Our guys made some nice plays, but we also had a number of unforced errors,” coach Stuart Holmes said.

“Conway Springs and McPherson had some really quality players. We’ll be able to compete much better against some of the top area teams once the guys develop their game more and get more consistent.”

Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to compete at the Smoky Valley Invitational at Lindsborg on Tuesday, then will host the Hillsboro Invitational Thursday at the Sports Complex. Matches will start at 3 p.m.
