Key contributors to this year’s Canton-Galva track team include: back row (from left), Troy Vogts, Jesse Evans, Bo Moddlemog, Marc Jowers; front row, Allie Enns, Kaitlin Dailey, Caitlin Nelson, Marianna Redden, Shannon Williams, Sara Unruh, Sabrina Hamilton.

Canton-Galva High School track coach Lyle Silsby comes into spring with the hope that the new season will see at least one Eagle qualify for state competition.

Silsby said that the regionals last year were disappointing on account of not having a state qualifier. Contending with limited numbers, Silsby also said relays will be hard to put together and will “mainly be for fun.”

But several Eagles have a chance to be competitive individually in a league that includes strong teams from Remington, Sedgwick and Peabody-Burns.

Among Canton-Galva’s 10 returning letter-winners is sophomore hurdler Marc Jowers.

“Marc has great form,” Silsby said. “We need to work on his speed, and if he can improve that, he could possibly make it to state this year.”

Jowers runs both the 300-meter and 110-meter hurdles. Allie Enns is a strong hurdler for the girls.

But the strength of the squad is in the throwing events, with Troy Vogts and Bo Moddlemog for the boys, and Sabrina Hamilton for the girls.

“Troy and Bo both have good potential—Bo in the shot and discus and Troy in the javelin,” Silsby said. “Both should improve on last season’s efforts.”

Hamilton came up just short of state qualification in the discus a season ago, and is primed for another strong season.

“Sabrina has worked over the winter, and if she can get healthy after a bout with pneumonia, she should do well,” Silsby said.

Canton-Galva opens the season at home, hosting the Moundridge meet at 4:30 p.m. April 1.
