Longtime educators Menno and Alice Isaac of North Newton had a life-changing experience teaching English to Chinese school teachers in Bao Tou, a city of 3 million people in Inner Mongolia.

The couple will present, “Summer teaching program in a ‘small’ city in China” during the next Tabor College “60-plus” Learning in Retirement Program at 10 a.m. Monday, March 24, at the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center in Hillsboro.

Menno Isaac is a 1958 graduate of Tabor College and has a master’s degree from Emporia State University. He is retired from a teaching career in Kingsburg, Calif.

Alice Penner Isaac was raised in the central valley of California. While a student at Tabor, she met Menno Isaac, from Meade. She went on to earn a master’s degree in music performance from California State University, Fresno. She is retired from teaching music in the Selma, Calif., school system.

While in Bao Tou, the Isaacs attended the Registered Three-Self Church, which was always full.

“We found this to be a wonderful opportunity to spread seeds of our faith in a country where there is finally an open door,” Alice said.

The public is welcome to attend all Learning in Retirement programs. Fees are $3 per session or $15 per semester ($28 per couple).

Registration and discount cards for lunch in the cafeteria will be available at the door during the half hour before the meeting.
