The Marion High School girls’ basketball team improved to 6-1 in league play with a 60-56 victory over Halstead Friday at Marion.

Having rallied from a 28-21 halftime deficit and having trailed by as much as 10, Marion took a 49-48 lead on a mid-range jumper by Lindsay Hett midway through the fourth quarter.

The game was a teeter-totter the rest of the way, with free throws by Amanda Richmond tying it at 52 and Julia Zeiner at 54.

Kayley Heerey made it 56-56 on a short jumper with 58 seconds left, and the Warriors forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds play.

Hett hit the first free throw following a two-shot foul with 49 seconds left, but missed the second. Kimber Hardey then made the play of the game, beating imposing post player Rebecca Denny to the loose ball.

Marion retained possession with a time out and ran off 29 seconds, but gave the ball back to Halstead prematurely when Hardey and Zeiner collided while reaching for the same pass. The tangle resulted in a traveling violation.

Marion wiped out the miscue  by forcing a turnover at the other end with 10 seconds left.

After swiping the ball, Heerey drew a foul in transition and knocked down a free throw—the other was waved off by a lane violation. She then swished an unguarded jumper at the buzzer.

Heerey hit five 3-point shots on the night and finished with 20 points. Hett scored 18 and Zeiner 15.

Coming—Marion (9-6 overall, 6-1 league) faces two road games this weekend. The Warriors visit Wichita Collegiate (12-3, 5-1) Friday night, with the visit to Haven (11-4, 6-0) originally slated for Feb. 5 rescheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Marion played its home finale Tuesday, Feb. 12, against Smoky Valley (9-5, 3-3).
