The Marion High School boys topped Hoisington 61-58 in Marion Friday.
Calvin Jeffrey scored 17 points, none bigger than the pair of foul shots he buried with 27 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The free throws extended a 59-58 lead enough to force the Cardinals to play away from the strength of their interior offense in the final moments.
Hoisington had battled back from a 34-26 halftime deficit to tie the game at 49-all with 6:08 remaining.
The furious rally was capped with an exchange of 3-pointers, as Justin Heidebrecht out-dueled Cameron Horesky to give Marion a 55-52 lead. Hoisington bounced back with a 6-2 run, and the Warriors trailed 58-57 with 1:53 to go.
Coming out of a time out, Marion turned the ball over to Jerad Powell, who missed a fast-break layup. Isaac Hett ripped down the rebound. At the other end, Heidebrecht finished a difficult drive with a soft touch to give Marion a 59-58 advantage with 1:14 to go.
Hoisington took only partial advantage of having three fouls to give before Marion would shoot 1-and-1 free throws.
Desperation and frustration on the part of the Cardinals spilled over into an already physical game with 26 seconds remaining, when Lee Goetz tackled a Marion ball handler and was called for an intentional foul.
Including the shots following the intentional, the Warriors went 2-for-5 at the line in the final moments, setting the stage for two last-ditch 3-point shots, both of which were breathtakingly close, neither of which went in.
Heidebrecht and Isaac Hett each scored 11 points and Eric Vogel added 10.
Coming—Marion (4-5) is at the Hillsboro Classic this week, where game times depend on both seedings and results in the 8-team bracket. The Warrior boys played top-seeded Hesston Monday night.
