The presidential election is still almost 10 months away, but voters in Marion County have decisions of local and county-wide importance to make much sooner than that.
City council seats in Hillsboro and Marion are on the line in the April 2 local election.
In Hillsboro, the Ward 1 seat currently occupied by Shelby Dirks will be on the ballot for voters on the west side of the city, while voters on the east side will determine the fate of the seat currently occupied by Byron McCarty in Ward 2.
The filing deadline for potential candidates is noon Tuesday, Jan. 22. The deadline for voter registration is Feb. 11.
Those same deadlines hold true in Marion, where two at-large seats will be on the ballot. Bill Holdeman and Jerry Kline currently occupy those seats.
Meanwhile, noon Tuesday, June 10, is the filing deadline for citizens wanting to run for county offices in anticipation of the Aug. 5 primary election.
This year, two of the three positions on the Board of Commissioners will be on the ballot. Those positions currently are occupied by Dan Holub from District 2 and Randy Dallke from District 3.
The following positions will also be determined: county attorney, currently occupied by Susan Robson; county clerk, occupied by Carol Maggard; treasurer, occupied by Jeanine Bateman; register of deeds, occupied by Jo Ottensmeier; and sheriff, occupied by Lee Becker.
Township, improvement district and precinct offices also will be determined by voters. Candidates need to declare by June 10.
Candidates for all county positions can file their intent at the election office in the county courthouse in Marion.
To vote in the Aug. 5 primary, citizens must be registered as a Republican or Democrat by July 21.
