The Marion County Extension Council, along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service and Marion County Conservation District will host a prescribed-burning workshop Jan. 23 inside the 4-H Building on the Marion County Fairgrounds.

The school will be led by Walt Fick, a range and pasture management specialist with Kansas State University.

“It is well documented that prescribed burning is a very effective rangeland management tool,” said Rickey Roberts, extension agent for Marion County. “It may be the most efficient method we have to control invasive brush and weeds, while we also improve wildlife habitat, grazing distribution, and increase livestock gains.”

Topics will include why and when to burn, how to plan a burn, weather and fire, and also safety and fire control. Equipment used in prescribed burns will be on display.

“If you manage rangeland, pastures, or CRP but don’t use prescribed burning, this workshop is a must,” Roberts said, “If you already use burning as a management tool, this will be a great opportunity to learn alternative burning techniques and how to better apply fire to reach your management goals.”

Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the workshop will conclude by 3 p.m. A $10 fee will cover a meal and course materials.

Interested persons are asked to RSVP by Jan. 18 by calling the Marion County Extension Office at 620-382-2325 or by e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
