The Marion girls won their second straight game by a wide margin, drubbing the visiting Lyons Lions 51-23 Saturday after trouncing Ellinwood 58-36 the night before.
Bridget Lundy looks to make an entry pass into the post Saturday. Lundy scored 4 points.
Lyons
After a slow start, the Warriors handled the Lions easily. A 24-4 run in the third quarter blew open a game that until that point was suffering from offensive gridlock.
A 9-5 first quarter and a 9-6 second gave Marion an 18-11 lead at halftime. But as the Warriors’ press defense found its rhythm, easy baskets started falling like buckets of rain.
Kayley Heerey pushed Marion’s lead to 24 points, stealing a poorly thrown pass and scoring two foul shots after her path to the rim on the fast break was illegally blocked with 1:41 left in the third period.
Julia Zeiner pushed the Marion lead to 25, running the floor to take a pass from Kimber Hardey.
The Warriors backed away from the press for much of the fourth quarter, and Lyons responded to the extra time and space with 8 points, their best frame of the night.
Zeiner scored 14 points, with Heerey notching 12 and Lindsay Hett 10 in the 28-point victory.
Ellinwood
Keyed by 26 points from Julia Zeiner and sparked by an 8-0 run to open the game, the Marion girls turned Friday’s game into a 22-point runaway.
The Warriors took a 14-2 lead with 1:30 left in the first quarter and carried a 19-4 lead into the second frame.
Midway through it, consecutive layups by Zeiner assisted by Lindsay Hett and Kimber Hardey gave Marion a 31-9 lead—its largest of the night—and prompted an Eagles time out 3:57 before halftime. The half ended with the Warriors ahead, 37-17.
Ellinwood closed the gap to 13 points in the third quarter, but a nifty give-and-go layup by Hett made it 49-34, and Marion outscored the Eagles 7-4 the rest of the way.
Coming—Marion (1-1 league, 3-5 overall) faces Hoisington (0-1, 5-2) Friday in Marion. The Warriors will then play in the week-long Trojan Classic in Hillsboro Jan. 14-19.
