Peru tops TC women 51-49 PDF Print E-mail

The Tabor College women lost 51-49 on Saturday, despite holding the Peru State Bobcats to one point in the final 3:58.

After Emma Pedro scored a basket for a 50-44 lead, Tabor coach Shawn Winter called time out, and the Bluejays rattled off five straight points capped by Stacie Herman, who drilled a pullup jumper with 2:16 to go.

The Bobcats called time out with 1:55 remaining and came up with two key offensive rebounds. The first, by Pedro, was immediately thrown back up, but the second, by Leisha Tennal, allowed the Bobcats to bleed 57 seconds out of a clock showing 1:15.

But the tiny margin on the scoreboard meant the Bluejays needed only a slight opening to wedge their collective foot in the door, and had the moment of opportunity in transition after Jenny Gaskell stole the ball from Tennal with 17 seconds to go.

But Tennal recovered well, taking away Herman’s pass to Brittany Roth. Herman fouled Tennal with 0:05 left.

Tennal scored the first free throw, but missed the second one, and time expired before the Bluejays could put up even a last-ditch 3-point bid.

Tabor carried a 25-22 lead into the second half despite scoring only 10 baskets. Peru State scored 20 points at the foul line to overcome a paltry 14-for-51 showing from the field.

Katie Fast and Jenny Gaskell each scored 10 points for Tabor.

Coming—Tabor (3-10) faced Oklahoma Wesleyan Monday night at Bartelsville. Tabor resumes conference play at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ottawa (2-11). The Bluejays visit Southwestern (9-4) at 5 p.m. Saturday.
