Mary Kathryn Butterworth Barr, 95, church planter and Sunday school teacher, died Dec. 24 in Hillsboro.
The funeral was Dec. 29 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Baxter Springs. Burial was at Hillcrest Cemetery in Galena.
She was born Nov. 15, 1912, to Henry and Gertie Rae Butterworth in Quapaw, Okla. On Jan. 27, 1941, she was married to James Glenn Barr, who predeceased her in 1985.
She is survived by two sons, James M. Barr of San Diego, Calif., and Donald L. and Johanna Barr of Jasper, Ark.; two daughters, Glenna and B.J. Garber of Carthage, Mo., and Martha and Steven Krispense of Marion; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established with Fellowship Baptist Church.
Letha Hughes, 82
Letha Mae Hughes, 82, former Peabody Gazette employee, died Dec. 28 at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
The funeral was Dec. 31 at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody. She was buried at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.
She was born June 9, 1925, to Robert Jay Thornton and Ida May Kinman in Craig County (Okla.). On Sept. 5, 1942, she was married to Warren Walton Hughes, who predeceased her.
She is survived by three sons, Warren Hughes of Emporia, Jack Hughes of Palmer, Alaska, and Mark Hughes of Carney, Okla.; a daughter, Carolyn Anderson of Peabody; a sister, Joy Valjean Kallenberger of Clairmore, Okla.; a brother-in-law, Larson Hughes of Tulsa, Okla.; two sister-in-laws, Ruby Broce of Peabody, and Norma Reid of Anthony; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Carol Riffel, 69
Carol Jean (Krispense) Riffel, 69, preschool teacher at Westside Christian Preschool for 24 years, died Dec. 23 at her Wichita residence.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. Dec. 27 at Westside Christian Church in Wichita and at 3 p.m. at Strassburg Baptist Church near Marion.
She was born Sept. 25, 1938, to David and Inez (Popp) Krispense in Marion. On Dec. 27, 1958, she was married to H. Edwin Riffel, who survives in Wichita.
She is also survived by a son, David and Sandy of Wichita; two daughters, Christine and DeLayne Herbel of Lehigh, and Karen and Dave Baliel of Marion; a brother, Steve and Martha Krispense of Marion; a brother-in-law, Dalmer Kaufman of Durham; and eight grandchildren.
Memorial funds have been established with Westside Christian Preschool and Strassburg Baptist Church Building Fund in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, P.O. Box 6, Marion, KS 66861.
John Waner, 91
John H. Waner, 91, retired farmer and public employee, died Dec. 25 at the Golden Living Center in Marion.
The funeral was Dec. 29 at the Holy Family Parish, St. Mark Church in Marion. A rosary was recited before the mass. Burial will be at the Marion Cemetery.
He was born Sept. 26, 1916, to Andrew M. and Frances S. (Garrison) Waner at the OK Ranch north of Florence. On Nov. 5, 1936, he was married to Irma Mae Allen, who predeceased him.
He is survived by a son, John and Rose Marie Waner of Alba, Texas; two daughter-in-laws, Judith Waner of Mansfield, Texas, and Alice Waner of Canton; two brothers, Vernon Waner of Marion, and George Waner of Junction City; a sister, Dorothy Hoffman of Marion; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and his friend and companion, Leona Manhart.
Memorial funds have been established with the Marion County Lake for trees and improvements and with the Holy Family Parish, St. Mark’s Church.
