United Way to cease operation in county

During the past several years, Marion County volunteers have attempted to establish a United Way organization to support charitable agencies in the county. During this, county businesses and individual community members have been asked to financially support this effort.

Recently it has become apparent that our county is not willing to provide the support necessary to sustain this agency. It is with extreme regret that the United Way in Marion County board of directors has decided to dissolve the organization effective Dec. 31. Funds remaining with United Way in Marion County will be distributed to those agencies funded during 2007.

The board of directors would like to thank community members who have faithfully supported the efforts of United Way. Board members have been consistently impressed by the need in our county and the level of service provided by our participating agencies. We are disappointed that it was not possible to sustain this organization and we would encourage the community to support our agencies through director contributions.

(Signed) United Way in Marion County Board of Directors: Gordon Mohn, chair,

Jayson Hanschu, Sara Hill,

Lu Janzen, Kelly Krch, Jessie Nikkel, Vince Nikkel, Lori Bebermeyer, executive director

TC president says thanks for support

On behalf of myself and my wife, Elaine, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support of Tabor College during the time of my presidency. We all know that a healthy Tabor College results in a healthier Hillsboro community. A healthy community results in a healthier Tabor College. That we need each other is indisputable.

As Tabor College enters its centennial year in 2008, I am excited about the future. The new college president, Jules Glanzer, will have a different style with his own unique sense of priorities and a passion to make Tabor College the best that it can be. Thank you for receiving us graciously when we came. I know that you will do the same for Jules and his wife, Peggy, when they arrive.

In the years to come, nothing would please me more than to see the city of Hillsboro and Tabor College both thriving.

On a more personal note, I also want to thank you for your expressions of concern and support during the time of my heart attack and surgery earlier this year. To be a part of a caring community is a valuable gift.

Larry W. Nikkel, president,

Tabor College

Blood donors were heroes here Dec. 17

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and the American Red Cross would like to thank the heroes who donated blood at the Hillsboro Red Cross blood drive Dec. 17.

Blood donors are heroes and deserve to know how much they are appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who made our last blood drive a success. We cannot fulfill our mission without each and every one of you.

We had a goal of 60 units, and we were successful in getting 69 units, with seven coming from first-time donors. What a success with all the willing donors coming to give.

Gladys Funk,

Shirley Kasper,

Co-coordinators
