The Marion High School boys were scorched by Chase Dippel and his Smoky Valley teammates Friday night in Lindsborg. Dippel scored 39 points as the Vikings topped the Warriors 70-50.
Calvin Jeffrey tallied 20 points for Marion.
Neither side put a second player in double digits. Luke Gordon posted eight points for Marion as did Ridge Jones for Smoky Valley.
Chase Carlson gave Marion a 4-2 lead 57 seconds into the contest on a pair of foul shots after getting whacked on a dribble-drive.
The teams traded scores, with Jeffrey drilling a 15-footer on the left wing to restore the slim advantage.
Eric Vogel posted up on Marion’s next trip, making a nice catch underneath the rack and flipping in the layup off the glass.
Dippel knotted the score at 10-10 at the other end, and Jones banked in an ugly jump shot to give the Vikings their second lead of the night.
A 3-pointer made it 15-10, and Isaac Hett cut it to 15-12 with a layup. The teams combined for three consecutive misses in the waning moments of the frame, and the second quarter began with the score unchanged.
The first five fouls had been called against Smoky Valley. As the whistles began to go against Marion with increasing frequency, the Vikings’ lead began to swell.
Smoky Valley outpaced the Warriors 21-13 in the second quarter and carried a 36-25 lead into halftime.
A 13-5 run to start the third quarter pushed the Vikings lead to 19 points halfway through.
With 3:55 to go, Hett scored a layup. Smoky Valley’s next trip ended when Jeffrey turned a steal into an uncontested layup going the other way.
Gordon knocked down a jumper just inside the foul line, but a Dippel 3-pointer took some of the luster off Marion’s momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
Jeffrey knocked down his first two 3-point attempts of the final frame. But the Warriors could not keep the good times rolling. A Smoky Valley score followed a foul call against Carlson, and a turnover on Marion’s next trip led to an easy layup for the Vikings.
Dippel slashed to the basket for a 3-point play a moment later, capping a 7-0 run that pushed the margin back to 17 points, 59-42, with 5:42 to go.
Gordon scored a fast break basket assisted by Carlson, but the Vikings rattled off a 17-2 run, prompting a Marion timeout with 2:13 to go.
The Warriors either outperformed or matched Smoky Valley in most statistical categories, including an 11-7 edge at the foul line—but were hamstrung by an 18-for-59 shooting performance.
Led by a 15-for-27 effort by Dippel, the Vikings hit 29 of their 63 field-goal attempts.
Coming—The Warriors were scheduled to face Sterling Tuesday at home. Marion’s next contest will be against Ellinwood Jan. 4 at home.
