Organizers of last month’s Marion County Toy Run presented checks totaling $10,100 to representatives from four community charitable organizations Saturday at Hillsboro State Bank. The proceeds, which will be used to buy Christmas presents for children from homes with significant financial needs, were divided in proportion to the number of free lunches provided within the respective school districts. Pictured above are: front row (from left), Corey Miller, representing Goessel Ministerial Alliance, Shelley Rooker, representing Hillsboro State Bank, Kim Abrahams, representing event co-sponsor Route 56 Classic Car Club, Mike Sechler, representing co-sponsor Abate District No. 9 of Kansas; back row, Wendy Steele, representing Marion Community Christmas (with funds going to the Marion-Florence and Centre districts), Rodger Charles, representing Peabody Association of Churches, Ken Johnson, representing Sons of the American Legion Post 366 and holding the check for the Hillsboro Area Ministerial Alliance, and Ron Funk, representing SAL. In addition to the cash distribution, proceeds included the purchase of 41 bicycles—not to mention an unspecified number of new toys donated by the 117 bikers and seven classic-car participants. In the 14 years since the first Marion County Toy Run, the event has raised around $74,000 for resident children.
