Liz Kleinsasser again led the Tabor College women’s cross-country team to a second-place finish with 48 points at the McPherson Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.
Kleinsasser finished second among 38 runners, posting a 5-kilometer time of 20 minutes, 18 seconds.
“This meet was a confidence builder for us,” coach Karol Hunt said. “We ran well on a difficult, hilly course. With a smaller field, a couple of runners who ordinarily are not recognized were able to be.”
Heidi Schmidt (21:55) claimed fifth place and Jera Teselle (22:16) took ninth. Ashley Schmidt (15th, 23:04) also earned a medal.
They were followed by Leah Kopper (17th, 23:33), Carrie Schroeder (18th, 23:34), Tessa Siebert (24th, 24:33), Tasheena Ruzinsky (27th, 24:43) and Elissa Richert (33rd, 25:52).
Shelby Miller and Amber Wiens did not race because of injuries.
Conference rival Southwestern (29) placed first, with Sterling (70) placing third, McPherson (84) fourth, and Bethany (133) fifth.
For the men, Tabor (77) placed third behind Southwestern (19) and McPherson (55).
Zac Remboldt (12th, 30:48) led the Bluejays followed by Justin Ball (31:53, 21st), Dan Sigley (24th, 32:11), Caleb Schroeder (25th, 32:17), Adam McPeck (29th, 33:23), Ric Johnson (34th, 35:21), Warren McKamey (40th, 38:06), Michael Adamyk (41st, 38:08) and Nathan Adamyk (44th, 45:44).
“Last year when we ran on this course, the conditions were brutal with the wind and heat added to the hills,” Hunt said. “In our preparation last week, we really focused on being mentally tough.
“That proved positive,” she added. “Our times were all faster for the returning runners.”
Southwestern’s Andrew Topham, of Peabody, claimed the meet title by turning in an 8-kilometer time of 27:53.
Coming—Tabor is slated to run in the NAIA Mid-States Classic at Southwestern on Saturday. The women run at 10:15 a.m and the men at 11:00.
