Nicholas Mueller battles Berean’s Michael Claassen during the race among No. 2 runners. Claassen passed Mueller in the battle for fourth place.
Against a tough field, the Hillsboro boys finished fourth among the seven schools that fielded teams at the Berean Academy cross-country meet Thursday at Harvey County East Park.
In all, 16 schools entered runners.
Formatted so a team’s top five runners compete in separate races, Hillsboro’s five accumulated a time of 91 minutes, 52.2 seconds.
That was well behind Mulvane, whose runners won all five races in a cumulative time of 84:32.9. Wichita Trinity finished second (89:02.8) and Berean third (91:05.9).
“Mulvane (4A) and Wichita Trinity (3A) are both ranked first or second in their respective classes in the state,” Holmes said. “Berean (2A) is state-ranked as well.”
Trailing Hillsboro were Hesston (93:25.9), Augusta (99:40.9) and Goessel (101:59.6).
“Placing fourth is a good effort, but the guys were hoping for a little higher team place,” coach Stuart Holmes said. “The guys gave a good effort again, but just didn’t run as well as they did last week, overall.”
Cody McMillen posted Hillsboro’s best finish with a second place among No. 1 runners in a time of 16:51. David Roberts of Mulvane won the race in 15:59.5.
Nicholas Mueller (18:29.2) placed fifth in the No. 2 race, Nathan Vogel (18:29.0) fifth in No. 3, Brandon McMillen (18:58) fourth in No. 4, and Johnathan Christian (19:05) third in No. 5.
In the single race for varsity girls, Heidi Schmidt led a trio of Trojans. She placed 24th with a time of 19:13.2 over 4 kilometers. Following her were Jessica Elliott (32nd, 19:32.2) and Clara Enns (43rd, 21:02.3).
The junior varsity boys placed fourth. Cody Blackketter placed ninth in 19:29. He was followed by Matthew Klenda (12th, 19:40.3), David Ratzloff (13th, 19:45), Jonathan King (22nd, 20:48.9), Alex Jost (23rd, 20:50.5), Tyrel Blecha (34th, 22:09.1), Michael Christian (36th, 22:10) and Nick Carlson (40th, 22:52.2). Krista Benda (20:49.2) placed fifth in the J.V. race for girls.
Coming—Hillsboro will run at Sterling on Thursday with races beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Berean
