Three area football teams won their games Friday night, as Canton-Galva
defeated Bennington 20-7. Canton-Galva plays at Inman this week.
Goessel defeated Flint Hills 55-38. The Bluebirds got a 68-yard kickoff return from Craig Banman to take a 6-0 lead on Friday night.
Flint Hills bounced back with a 5-yard touchdown run and held an 8-0 lead after the first quarter.
Goessel scored the next six touchdowns, carrying a 14-8 lead into halftime after Austin Unruh burrowed into the end zone from a yard out. Unruh then connected with Weston Hiebert for the 2-point conversion.
The third quarter belonged to the Bluebirds, with Banman blasting into the end zone from 9 yards out. The point after failed, but Unruh added to Goessel’s lead with a 15-yard touchdown run on the next drive.
Kendall Voth caught a 34-yard strike from Unruh, and Banman hauled in the 2-point conversion.
With a 2-yard run, Dustin Peterson broke into the end zone for the fourth Goessel score in a 26-point third quarter. The Bluebirds led 40-8 at the end of the frame, and Hiebert returned an interception 72 yards to start the fourth.
Flint Hills outscored GHS the rest of the way, and Banman posted Goessel’s 53rd point of the night by running back a second kickoff 66 yards for the score. Unruh capped it off with a 2-point conversion pass to Voth.
Goessel totaled 145 rushing yards on 31 carries by eight different players. Unruh finished with six completions on 14 attempts and 73 yards. Flint Hills totaled 276 yards through the air and 141 on the ground. Goessel plays at Burrton this week.
Peabody-Burns parlayed a pair of early touchdowns into an 18-2 victory over Sedgwick, despite sloppy weather.
“I’d say we played pretty well for being in a mess,” head coach David Pickens said. “We moved the football pretty well when the field was decent at the beginning of the game.”
“We got a couple of scores early and we played safe football the rest of the way,” he added.
With rain hampering both teams’ passing games, the Warriors opted to hand off at every opportunity.
Peabody-Burns’ first touchdown came on a pass from Nathan Bishop to Brandon Pickens for 18 yards and a 6-0 lead. Trevor Hamm added a 17-yard touchdown run. Will Pratt notched both extra point kicks, and the Warrior defense scored four points on two safeties.
The Sedgwick defense broke the shutout, scoring a safety on penalty flagged against Bishop for intentional grounding. Because he was in the end zone when he let the pass go, officials signaled the 2-point score.
“We would have liked to have been able to throw more, but it didn’t work out that way,” Pickens said. “Our offensive line played well and did a good job pass-blocking when the field was in good shape. But when the weather kept us from passing, (Sedgwick) brought 11 guys up to shut down our run, and there wasn’t much we could do about that.”
PBHS visits Remington this week. The Warriors (4-0) will look to settle an old score with the Broncos, who handed Peabody-Burns its first loss of the season a year ago, 22-20.
