Hillsboro thumps Ellinwood for homecoming win PDF Print E-mail
Written by Don Ratzlaff

The Hillsboro Trojans dominated Ellinwood from start to finish Friday night, claiming an easy 47-0 homecoming victory at Reimer Field.

The Trojans took the opening kickoff and scored in seven plays with Spencer Brown dashing in from 9 yards out. He added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 9:22 still to play in the opening period.

After Ellinwood went three-and-out, the Trojans drove 45 yards in four plays with Brown scoring again, this time on a 28-yard scramble with 6:00 left in the quarter. His kick was true, and HHS was up 14-0.

After a brief Eagle drive sputtered to a halt, Jacob Yoder returned Ellinwood’s punt 25 yards to give HHS the ball at midfield. Five plays later, including a 33-yard run by Yoder, Brown scored his third TD of the period, this one from 2 yards out. His third PAT kick made it 21-0 with still 1:01 left in the first quarter.

Ellinwood went three-and-out again, and Hillsboro started its next drive at the Eagle 38. The Trojans appeared to stall out in three plays, but the Eagles fumbled Yoder’s deep punt and Daniel Jost recovered the ball at the Ellinwood 5-yard line.

Yoder ran in for the score on Hillsboro’s first play from scrimmage. This time Brown missed his kick, but the Trojans led 27-0 with 10:02 left in the half.

On their next three-and-out, Ellinwood faked a punt, but gained nothing on the run, giving HHS the ball at the Eagle 42.

The Trojans were in paydirt again in four plays -- and it was Brown on the delivery, running in from 17-yards out after appearing to be stopped around the line of scrimmage. His kick veered right, but the Trojans were ahead 33-0 with 6:43 left in the half.

The Trojans scored once last time before halftime, driving 68 yards in nine plays with Ishmael Morris running in from 12 yards out. Brown kicked the extra point for a 40-0 lead with 2:16 left.

That’s where the half ended. With a 40-point lead, the continuous clock rule kicked in for the entire second half.

With the starters on the field, Hillsboro scored one last time on its first possession of the second half. Working on the passing game, Brown threw to Jost for the final touchdown, this one of 9 yards. Isaac Leihy’s kick made it 47-0.

The starters took the rest of the night off, but the reserves held their own as the game finally wound down to an end.

With the win, Hillsboro improves to 2-2 while Ellinwood falls to 0-4.
