Canton-Galva

The Eagle volleyball team finished second to Sedgwick at the Marion triangular Saturday.

Sedgwick had defeated Canton-Galva in three games at the Goessel tournament a week earlier, and the teams played another close match at Marion.

In the championship match, the Eagles won Game 1, 25-11, but Sedgwick rallied for a 25-18 win in Game 2. The rubber game then went to Sedgwick, 25-16.

Canton-Galva swept through pool play despite an injury to Allie Enns, who returned to the lineup for bracket play. In pool play, Canton-Galva beat Halstead (25-18, 25-18), DeSoto (20-25, 25-11, 25-23) and Centre (25-13, 25-14).

CGHS defeated Eureka (25-15, 25-17) to advance to the title match.

Kylie Haines and Kaycie Shearer led the offense with 19 and 16 kills, respectively. Shearer added nine aces from the service line.

“I have seen a lot of improvement from the Goessel tournament,” coach Randy Skiles said. “We did a great job of competing all day.”

On Sept. 11, the Eagles played a triangular at Berean, losing to Sedgwick (25-20, 21-25, 21-25) and Berean (13-25, 25-9, 21-25).

On Sept. 18, CGHS hosted a triangular. The varsity will compete in a triangular at Remington Sept. 25.

Centre

The Cougars played at Solomon Sept. 11, losing to the hosts in three games before defeating Elyria (25-6, 25-11).

In the match with Solomon, Centre took the first game 26-24 behind strong defensive efforts from Samantha Alvarez and Carlye Simons.

Solomon bounced back to take the match with consecutive wins (25-21, 25-19). Kylie Burhoop led the Cougars against Solomon with seven kills. Leann Pankratz led the team with 11 kills against Elyria.

Centre played at Flint Hills Sept. 18 and will compete at the Herington Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Goessel

The Bluebirds went 3-0 in pool play at the eight-team Tescott Invitational on Saturday, but went 0-2 in bracket play to finish fourth.

According to coach Crysta Guhr, the Bluebirds played their best volleyball of the season in the morning.

“Everything clicked,” she said. “We passed extremely well, set the ball up and finished it. We ran a lot of options on offense and were able to mix it up real well.”

Rinda Duerksen killed off 50 points on the day.

“She was a dominate figure in the front row for us—both hitting and blocking,” Guhr said. “She has improved each and every night and is a very fun and dynamic player to watch.”

Karina Harvey was an impact player in the Bluebird back row.

“She took hold of the defense and was everywhere,” Guhr said.

At a Sept. 11 triangular at Remington, Goessel lost to the home team (20-25, 12-25) and Inman (10-25, 16-25).

Goessel (8-10) played Moundridge on Tuesday and will compete at a tournament in Olpe on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
