The Tabor College cross-country teams ran at Lake Afton in Wichita on Saturday.
The women’s squad had three runners out but still placed sixth out of 14 teams in its first full-distance run of the season.
“We were not at full strength for this meet,” coach Karol Hunt said. “Shelby Miller, Amber Wiens and Tesheena Ruzinsky were not able to compete because of injuries.”
Liz Kleinsasser and Heidi Schmidt placed 1-2 for the second straight week. Kleinsasser placed fifth overall at 20 minutes, 8 seconds, while Schmidt finished 23rd at 21:51.
Sophomores Leah Kopper (22:38), Jera Teselle (22:41) and Carrie Schroeder (22:47) ran together, placing 39th, 40th and 41st, respectively.
“A year of experience showed in their performances compared to last season,” Hunt said. “Leah cut 52 seconds, Jera 1:42, and Carrie 26 seconds from their 2006 races.”
The men placed eighth out of 14 colleges competing.
Zac Remboldt and Justin Ball took the top spots for the second straight meet, with both breaking the 30-minute barrier. Remboldt ran 29:17 for 34th place while Ball ran 29:41 for 42nd place. Remboldt improved his time by 43 seconds over last year.
“It’s exciting for Justin to run the first 8-K of his college career under 30,” Hunt said. “I have high hopes for his running.”
Dan Sigley (31:42) finished third for Tabor at 81st, followed by Ric Johnson (32:17) at 86th, and Caleb Scroeder (32:42) at 90th.
Adam McPeck, Michael Adamyk, Warren McKamey and Nathan Adamyk all ran their first 8-K race.
“Their times will improve as each learns to compete at this distance,” Hunt said.
Johnson improved his time by 52 seconds from a year ago.
“In this meet we were able to run against some of the other conference schools,” Hunt said. “Endurance is earned over time, and we are progressing well in our training. It’s still early in the season, but I like our work ethic and team attitude.”
Coming—Tabor runs Saturday in Buena Vista, Colo. Both men and women will run a 5-K race. which begin at 9 a.m.
