The Tabor College volleyball team swept opponents Avila, Central Christian, Bacone and Stephens at the McPherson College Classic on Friday and Saturday, to open the season with a 4-0 non-conference mark.

Tabor defeated Stephens, 30-14, 30-13, 30-15, on Saturday evening. Aggressive play from middle blockers Heather Witham and Jordan Crosson stymied the Stephens attack while strong serving from Ashley Cohlmia gave Tabor early leads.

The Bluejays jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first game and a 10-1 advantage in the second. Stephens played a more determined game early in the third and trailed by only two (11-9) when senior setter Audrey Schellenberg stepped to the line for Tabor. The Bluejays rattled off four quick points, leading to a time out.

Cohlmia stepped to the service stripe leading 17-11 and ran the score to 25-12 during the next rotatio. Fittingly, Tabor’s final point of the night came as Taylor Lawrence served one last ace.

Over the entire weekend set, coach Amy Ratzlaff’s Bluejays lost only one game—the Friday night opener against Avila. Tabor bounced back to claim the match in four games (25-30, 30-23, 30-22, 30-21).

Tabor built on the momentum, thrashing Central Christian (30-25, 30-25, 30-19) on Saturday morning, and trounced Bacone (30-11, 30-15, 30-14) in the afternoon.

Coming—Tabor played its home opener at 7 p.m. Tuesday against McPherson. Results will be published next week.

This weekend, Tabor opens a stretch of five games in five days by traveling to Point Lookout, Mo., for matches on Friday and Saturday.

The team then returns to Hillsboro to host Friends at 7 p.m. Tueday. Sept. 11.
