Centre

On Aug. 28, the Centre High School volleyball squad played its first matches of the year at the Elyria Christian quadrangular tournament, posting a 1-2 record to start the season.

Centre defeated Elyria (25-17, 25-13) behind six aces and three kills from Kylie Burhoop. Samantha Alvarez was a perfect 12-for-12 setting and Leann Pankratz tallied three kills on three attempts.

Canton-Galva defeated the Cougars (25-21, 25-22) in the second match. Burhoop had five kills in the match, Pankratz had four and Bridgette Burns added three.

Inman defeated Centre (25-17, 25-17) in the third match, limiting the Centre attack to six kills in two games.

Centre played on Sept. 4 at St. Xavier, but results were not available at press time. Next up for the Cougars is a home tournament on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Centre will also play at home at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Canton-Galva

The Canton-Galva High School varsity volleyball team played at Elyria on Aug. 28, where the team lost the first match to Inman (25-13, 25-16).

The Eagles then defeated Centre (25-21, 25-22) and defeated Elyria (25-6, 25-6).

The team played at Bennington on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. CGHS hits the hardwood at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Goessel and 4 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Berean Academy.

Goessel

The Goessel High School volleyball team went 1-2 at its season opener on Aug. 28 at Claflin.

The Bluebirds lost to the hosts (25-21, 15-25, 18-25) and to Hillsboro (20-25, 21-25) before defeating Lyons (25-9, 25-15).

Jessica Goertzen led in assists with 32 for the night, and as a team, Goessel put 95 percent of its serves in play and notched 15 aces.

Rinda Duerksen led the team with 16 kills for the night. Duerksen also led in blocks with 14. Karina Harvey led in digs with 26 for the night.

Goessel played at Bennington on Tuesday night, but results were not available at press time.

This week, the team plays host at 9 a.m. on Saturday and again at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11.

Peabody-Burns—On Aug. 25, the Peabody-Burns High School volleyball team played its first tournament of the season.

The Warriors compiled a 4-1 record by defeating Burlingame (25-13, 25-15), Burrton (25-12, 18-25, 25-22) and Central Burden (15-25, 25-23, 25-15) before losing to first-place finisher Caldwell (25-13, 25-23).

Caldwell also finished 4-1, but held a tiebreaker as a result of defeating the hosts. Caldwell’s loss came against Hartford (26-24, 25-23).

PBHS played a quadrangular at home on Sept. 4, but results were not available at press time. The Warriors play at Solomon at 8 a.m. on Saturday and travel to Ell-Saline on Sept. 11.
