The Tabor College cross-country teams visited Baker University on Saturday for the first meet of the season.
The Tabor women placed fifth in a field of 10. The men placed seventh out of nine teams.
Running a 3.2 kilometer race instead of the 5 kilometer standard used in mid-season runs, Liz Kleinsasser led the women’s team with a 12-minute, 22-second run good for sixth place among 86 finishers.
“She had an outstanding start to her college career,” coach Karol Hunt said.
Heidi Schmidt (12:59, 22nd) ran second for the Bluejays and Leah Kopper (13:44, 40th) ran third.
“Leah had a good summer of running and came into the design with a renewed desire to run,” Hunt said. “She competed really well today.“
Three finished the race together: Shelby Miller (14:02, 48th), Jera Teselle (14:02, 49th) and Carrie Schroeder (14:02, 50th).
“The team depth showed,” Hunt said. “It’s positive for the team to have teammates who can push each other during races.”
Tessa Siebert (14:13, 53rd), Ashley Schmidt (14:24, 56th), Tasheena Ruzinsky (14:58, 63rd) and Elissa Richert (16:05, 69th) also finished the race.
Sarah Fogle and Amber Wiens sat out with injuries.
For the men, Zac Remboldt (18:16, 31st) ran first for Tabor.
He was followed by five Bluejays who finished only 13 places apart: Justin Ball (18:54, 37th), Caleb Schroeder (19:06, 38th), Dan Sigley (19:26, 42nd), Ric Johnson (19:46, 45th) and Adam McPeck (20:18, 50th).
“Zac and Ric ran well compared to last season at the Baker meet,” Hunt said. “Zac ran 30 seconds faster and Ric turned in 65-second lower time. “
Also finishing for the Tabor men were: Michael Adamyk (21:23, 57th), Warren McKamey (23:26, 66th) and Nathan Adamyk (27:27, 76th).
“The meet was a good start to our season,” Hunt said. “Early competition provides beneficial feedback—we know where we are and the work we still need to do peak at the end of the season.”
Coming—Tabor teams run the Friends Invitational race at Lake Afton Park on Friday. The women run at 6 p.m. and the men at 6:45.
