After a 7-4 run to regionals out of the eighth district of Class 2-1A last season, Canton Galva football coach Zac Hoppes has 13 returning seniors and letter-winners this fall.

Seven players will be back to contribute to an offense that enabled returning senior quarterback Ted Regehr to throw for 2,186 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2006.

Taking advantage of the size and skills of top receiver Joel Hardman, who graduated in 2006, Regehr completed 60 percent of his passes.

This year, Regehr’s primary targets will be newcomers to the varsity team.

Dustin Abrahams, a 5-foot 8-inch, 160 pound junior will be vying for catches with sophomores Brett Williams (5-10, 150) and Logan Rierson (5-6, 125).

The Eagles’ running game will be powered by senior runningback Andrew Westbrook, who picked up 294 yards in a limited role behind the now-departed Stephen Jowers.

Westbrook has lettered in consecutive years for Hoppes.

The Eagles’ offensive line should be a strength. Bo Moddelmog, Bret Middleton, Wes Fickes, Aaron Thompson and John Shearer all have a measure of experience playing the position.

A blocking back on offense, Tony Arendt recorded 55 tackles as a linebacker last year. West­brook led all returning players with 108 tackles, and Shearer tallied 85.

Bryant Baldwin (5-5, 155) gives CGHS another option at the running back and linebacker positions.

“We’re once again short on numbers, with the total roster around 20 players,” Hoppes said.

“That being the case, we will have to avoid injuries in order to be successful. If we can avoid the injury bug, we should be competitive in the Heart of America league, as well as in district play.

Canton-Galva plays its first of the season on the road against Remington on Friday night.
