The Board of Education for Unified School District 410 received the green light to authorize “the offering for sale of general obligation bonds” for three of the four facility improvement projects approved in the bond election.

Superintendent Doug Huxman reported that an agreement had been reached between litigation parties so that bonds for $4.605 million—the “non-Tabor portion” of the election—can be sold.

“This is a very positive step for the district,” Huxman said.

But issues regarding the maintenance/transportation/central office portion of the facility improvements—originally intended to be housed in the city-owned AMPI building—remain unresolved.

The board met in executive session with the architects for nearly 90 minutes to discuss real estate acquisition. No decision was reached.

Huxman said discussion about how to deal with the bond projects will continue at a special meeting Tuesday, Aug. 21. The board will also hold a public hearing and vote on adoption of the 2007-08 budget.

Greg Vahrenberg of Piper Jaffray & Co. reviewed with the financial aspects of the bond process with the board.

“We’ve had a couple of challenges,” Vahrenberg said about the impact of litigation, splitting the bonds and changes in interest rates could have on the overall mill levy.

“But we’re still in an overall favorable interest environment.”

In other business the board:

n heard a report from HHS students Evan Just, Neil Kaiser and Lonnie Benda and advisers Creigh Bell and Micky Harvey about their competition in Nashville, Tenn., representing the local Technology Student Association chapter.

n accepted Lori Thurston’s resignation as library aide and lunchroom supervisor at Hillsboro Elementary School.

“She’s done a wonderful job,” principal Evan Yoder said about Thurston’s work over the years.

n approved issuing a supplemental contract to Jill Hein as assistant volleyball coach for Hillsboro High School girls.

n approved issuing classified contracts to Linda Ewert for food service at HHS and to Vickie Huxman as library aide/lunchroom supervisor at HES.

n approved pay for proctors for MAP testing to remain at $40 per session and pay of $7.30 per hour for substitute para-educators.

n approved usage guidelines for USD 410 facilities. No changes were made from last year’s guidelines.

n approved two out-of-state trips for students, one for FFA members of HHS to attend the national conventional in Indianapolis and to award $1,000 to support the trip and to provide district vehicles and fuel for the trip, and the second for students to attend the FCCLA national meeting in Denver and to provide district vehicles and fuel for the trip.
